Uppity?

Obama's "uppity" but it's okay that Palin demands deference? From Political Punch:
Rick Davis, campaign manager for Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., just told Fox News Channel's Chris Wallace that McCain running mate Gov. Sarah Palin won't subject herself to any tough questions from reporters "until the point in time when she'll be treated with respect and deference."
Did she miss that whole trying-to-make-our-political-leaders-as-distinguishable-as-possible-from-British-royalty that American politicians did in the 1780s?

Guess she thinks they were busy hammering out the pledge?

"Respect and deference."

Like the speech she gave at the RNC? Full of snark and vinegar and insults? Like that?

yes. but you know what, Dave? Part of me hopes they really don't see it, don't get it. because if they are knowingly cloaking themselves in their (race and class) privilege, then I just don't know what to say.

She's finally agreed to an interview with Charles Gibson, but just the one. This infuriates me. Anyone running for public office should be willing to be interviewed.

On another note, I can't believe that Westmoreland tried to claim that he didn't know that connotation of "uppity." I'm from the North, and I know it. Question: I've also heard it used in connection to women who don't know their place. Is it used that way in the South, as well?

LOVE your snark about the Pledge, by the way.

k8, yes, for women, too. I've seen people defend Westmoreland with dictionary definitions of uppity, as if words don't have meaning outside dictionaries, as if they don't gain meaning through use. Grrrr!

Quinn--I almost didn't put it--afraid I'd be too elitist :-). Since I'm a historian, maybe it's permissible.
