Leslie, I need to read that Onion piece.

Nicole, I share your opinion on June!

Anna, do check out the Wray book--there are valid criticisms of it, but I get his points.ellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01867952598756889997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19408862.post-59482941622871489832013-04-08T18:49:51.574-05:002013-04-08T18:49:51.574-05:00I haven't seen the show (we don't pay for ...I haven't seen the show (we don't pay for cable), but I've definitely heard the hubbub. I'm not from the south, but I can identify with the rural, working class family. Also, what wrong with playing in the mud? That's what my kids are doing right now!

“she’s putting the show’s earnings into trust funds for her children,” noting that, “I want my kids to look back and say, ‘Mama played it smart.’”

That is a good mama, and I have nothing but respect for that lady.Nicolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03276995787173932700noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19408862.post-5927483730491555092013-04-08T15:52:07.776-05:002013-04-08T15:52:07.776-05:00I remember talking to you about the "not quit...I remember talking to you about the "not quite white" idea during office hours one day. I need to check out Matt Wray's book.

I know "upper class" white people don't like me at all, despite (or perhaps because of) the fact that I can keep up with them intellectually and understand all their cultural references.

I never put two and two together, but it makes sense now why I've never found Honey Boo Boo to be funny - I see through the caricatures. The members of Honey Boo Boo's family resemble people I know and love. The people laughing at Honey Boo Boo are the same people who would make fun of my family in a heartbeat. I think you're onto something. :)Annahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06734100010960730923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19408862.post-79709154682687259902013-04-08T14:27:39.267-05:002013-04-08T14:27:39.267-05:00Thanks for this post. It made me curious--I may try to find an episode and watch it.

Whenever I see a reference to the show, I unfortunately think about this Onion piece.Leslie M-Bhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02434392840359276805noreply@blogger.com
